Former "Culwulla Chambers" Including Interiors

This was Australia's very first skyscraper and earmarked the beginning of government's discussions on how tall buildings should be for forty years! Highly influential in both designs and outfits, mostly modelled on New York's buildings; like fast service lifts, fireproof, ducted vacuum cleaning, internal fire escape, etc. Right next door is the Dior boutique store which uses part of Culwulla Chambers building as part of its interior spaces. Interestingly, the most fascinating part of the history of this gorgeous building to me is it triggered the Heights of Buildings Act of 1912 causing conflicts between State and Local governments on how to regulate building heights. The building is a stunning example of Federation Free Style of combination bricks and stone. According to information available, Culwulla Chambers is named after the owner's family home in Jamberoo, a NSW town near Kiama on the South Coast. Beautiful and significant heritage building for all ages and backgrounds to explore.
