Identity was a program of two halves. The first by the Australian Dance Theatre was appalling, repetitive, drab, no discipline or technique. My neighbours in the theatre also wanted to leave. Every time it looked like finishing, it started up again. Infuriatingly pretentious and empty. The second ballet was moving and superb!

Firstly, before I register my view of the performances, I would like to share my concern for the comments made by the Conductor, Nicolette Fraillon, at the beginning of the performance. I have no issue with her oral welcome to country, but I do take issue when comments of a political vent are espoused in a public forum such as this, with no prior warning. The tickets to the Ballet are not inexpensive and it is one way people, and I in particular, seek to escape the everyday world and immerse in something beautiful, if but for a few hours. I have no issue with Nicolette espousing her opinions, because when it all boils down that is all they are - opinions, but this was neither the time nor the place. Whatever anyone thinks of Stan Grant, that is a matter for them and for them to share in the appropriate places and circles. The Arts should be above politics, religion and all other extraneous factors. I thought this very poor form for those in control at the Sydney Opera House who allowed this to play out. It left a very sour taste! As for the performances, Identity whilst full of energy and with moments of lightness and fun, just did not appeal to me. The constant breath taking and letting was very off putting also. The music however, was quite lovely. On the other hand, the performance of Paragon was totally enchanting and the costuming, music, technical ability on show and the visual feast were delightful. Such talent arrayed on one stage...brilliant! It left me with a feeling of euphoria and with a smile on my face, which had faded after the introduction by Nicolette.

Paragon was absolutely fabulous. A delight to see past stars. The Hum...ho hum. What I didn't appreciate was having the whole Stan Grant mess shoved down my throat. Keep this stuff OUT of our theatres.
