Out of 6,704 Mk1 Ansons built in UK, there are only ten surviving worldwide, with only one flying - in NZ. This Anson was assembled from many parts found around the country on farms etc. The curator has a solid link with aviation history in that his father, Lt Penhall, who flew SE5As, RE8s etc during WWI, was a pall bearer for the body of Manfred von Richtoven (The Red Baron). He has many stories, items and articles concerning, not only his Anson, but many other aircraft in RAAF Service over the years. He has worked tirelessly over some thirty years, with little help, to be able to present this rare aircraft. Alongside the main display is a complete Anson cockpit, which he allows the kids to climb into. Of particular note is a small display concerning the US presence in Ballarat during WWII, including the Aussie Slang dictionary for them. An amazing collection for a small museum such as this and deserving of support.
