Magnificent Gardens!!! Government House is surrounded by 11 hectares of beautiful gardens and grounds that feature magnificent lawns, which are sparingly planted with specimen trees and surrounded by large beds of trees and shrubs. There are many fine mature trees including conifers, Australian rainforest species and deciduous trees. I love the irregular arrangements of the trees and also the meandering paths throughout the gardens. As you walk around you'll also see commemorative trees planted in various places throughout the grounds. These trees, known as the Governors Trees, were planted by the various Governors and their spouse at the end of their tenure. There are also ceremonial trees, known as the Royal Trees, that line the main drive. These trees were planted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. HRH the Prince of Wales and HRH the Princess of Wales planted ceremonial trees near the walkway that borders the West Lawn, and nearby is a tree planted by HRH The Duke of Cambridge. The gardens were designed by John Sayce of Caulfield in 1873 and their 19th century English character is still clearly evident. The gardens are thought to be the most intact 19th century mansion gardens remaining in Melbourne.
