image Inverleigh Cemetery is on the land of Wadawurrung traditional owners.
The settlement was begun by sheep farmers in the 1830s and the cemetery was laid out in 1844, then officially proclaimed in 1859. There were burials prior to 1844 but the earliest surviving headstone is dated 1851.
The yard is laid out in a square grid, with wide flat paths, and is on a flat even piece of ground, so it will be relatively easy for people with limited mobility. Parking is on the side of the road out front and enter through the memorial gates built in 1938. The cemetery is very well kept, with information signs, rubbish bins, seating, and old wooden toilet buildings on the perimeter. There is no drinking water, but plenty of shade from old trees.
The yard has a lot of historic graves that have been cleaned and restored, and is still in use with a modern memorial wall for cremated remains, and recent burials. There is also a memorial for those buried in unmarked graves, with a list of names set in brass plaques.
