"Grandpa, take me to the water park" was my introduction. Knowing resistance is useless, I gathered hats and sunscreen and still under instruction, the bag of assorted plastic implements. "This way", and he took off on the strider bike with alarming speed. Past the cricket ground with a game in progress where my attention wavered long enough to earn a rebuke. Past the pristine but vacant tennis courts, which should have been buzzing. Around the lake with its honking pond life to the rather secluded destination set well back from the street. Throwing the bike down, the Crocs were off and before I could size up the hazards, little hands & feet were into a grey water puddle. "Yucky", I growled and steered him to the fresh water. With no further encouragement, so began an absorbing activity that seemed to have no structure and no sense of time. Other little kids joined and with nothing more than a glance they worked together on the project. This is how the world should work. That's what I learnt from Basterfield Park playground.
