This is the remaining reinforced concrete plyon from the 305 metre Centenary Bridge which was built as a continuation of Beach Street, from Princes Street on the east to Swallow Street on the west and over the then four railway lines of Station Pier, Port Melbourne. It was specifically built to convey Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, representing his father King George V, to Melbourne during the 1934 Victorian centenary celebrations of European settlement.
The Prince disembarked from the warship Sussex at Princes Pier on 18 October 1934 and his party was driven over the bridge and along Beaconsfield Parade to St Kilda, then up Fitzroy Street and along St Kilda Road to the Melbourne Town Hall. The bridge was demolished by the State Government in 1991 as part of the Station Pier redevelopmen and all that remains is this one pylon which is located on the eastern approach to Station Pier.
