Another orthopaedic surgeon performed a total knee replacement in 2013 at Cotham Private Hospital in Melbourne. I had a terrible experience with pain, this led to a prolonged recovery.
The knee did not feel right since the operation. I was in pain, I was walking awkwardly and my leg was bowed. I was unable to ride my bicycle and this was a huge concern for me as I loved cycling.
At the postoperative appointment with this surgeon, I told him of my concerns, 'that the knee did not feel right and I was in pain'. I was told that it was due to my age the the results were not as good . In good faith, I accepted his advice and put up with he knee.
Two and a half years later, I was referred to a new orthopaedic surgeon, Mr. Ponneran Pak, by my doctor. When he saw me walk into his consulting room, he immediately knew, I had a huge problem.
He referred me to have x-rays and scans. This confirmed that the left total knee replacement was very mal-aligned and mal-rotated. The only way to correct this was to undergo a revision total knee replacement.
I had a lot of reservations about having this major surgery but I eventually decided to go ahead with it. I asked lots of questions, and this young orthopaedic surgeon answered every one of those questions honestly. He understood how I felt and offered to do the very best he could. His honesty and positive manner had a huge impact on me. I left that consultation confident and I had much faith in this young man.
I was asleep for 4 hours but when I woke up from the operation, I was pleasantly surprised as my legs were no longer bowed and my toes were pointing in the right direction. The knee felt right this time.
Throughout my recovery, this surgeon has stayed in touch with me even while he was on holidays, following up on my progress and giving me encouraging support.
This amazing young orthopaedic surgeon, underestimates his talent and skills, the care and understanding he has given and shown to me are testament of that. As I go into my seventh week since the revision total knee replacement, I can say that my knee has not felt this good for as long as I can remember. I can say with much confidence that I would highly recommend Mr. Pon Pak to anyone who is looking for an orthopaedic surgeon.
PS: My new mantra for everything that I confront now is, "Pon Positive".
