This statue, just in front of the north transept on the Gisborne Street side of St. Patrick's Cathedral, is that of Daniel O`Connell (1775-1847), the great liberator of Ireland and the emancipator of Catholics. The life-sized bronze statue, by Sir Thomas Brock, depicts 'OConnell dressed in his typical Irish garb of long coat and cloak, with his left hand grasping his coat and his right hand holding a petition scroll which he presented to parliament and at his feet the statutes on which he argued his case. The statue was commissioned in 1886, cast in Brussels, Belgium in 1888 and erected in 1890. Apparently it was originally erected in front of the Cathedral, but was moved to make way for the statue of Archbishop Mannix, former Archbishop of Melbourne and regarded by Melbourne Catholics as one of the great Catholic leaders of Melbourne.
