image This new adventure experience from the long-established adventure bay charters takes you to explore Boston Island, a privately owned island and former sheep station.
The ferry operates two or three times a day, depending on day and demand, and the journey to Boston Island is short and pleasant, taking about 30 minutes each way. The ferry is well equipped although refreshments weren't served on the outward journey, beer and wine was purchased on the return journey.
The island itself is very much a working sheep station, still with ~1,000 head of sheep. There are no facilities on the island, so come prepared. There is a toilet on the boat and portaloos on the island, but no supply of water or food.
The tours are approximately 2 1/2 to 3 hours long, and you can either have a guided walking tour or an e-bike tour. In either case the tour will be suited to the desires and abilities of the group. I recommend at least being comfortable on a bike before taking the e-bike tour, although you certainly do not need to be an accomplished bike warrior. The terrain is a little rocky in places, and there are a couple of hills to tackle. However, the e-bikes make the hills a breeze, and excellent guides will remind you which gear to be in, how to change gear, and when to use the turbo option on the e-bike.
While the tour was guided with an overall route, the paddock and hillsides were open for exploration. More advanced bike riders were welcome to tackle some of the more challenging terrain as they saw fit, staying within the ride.
The e-bike tour takes in each of the sights of the island, with time to explore picnic beach and cemetery beach, paddle your feet, and rest your butt.
If you are just doing the tours, take a ferry over and catch the next return ferry. There are no conveniences on the island if you decide to stay. However, you are welcome to pack a picnic, a towel, some shade, and extra water and visit one of the deserted beaches. Homestead beach is the easiest to access from the ferry landing, is protected from the breeze and waves, and is the perfect spot for a picnic before embarking on the bike tour of the island.
The team are working on new routes and working on providing refreshments on the island, and so look for changes over the next couple of years.
It is definitely worth a visit to this remote part of Port Lincoln, to explore a rugged sheep station island with amazing views of the port, the national park, the fisheries, and the oceans. Services: Group tours, Private tours
