Returning to WA and wanted to see some outstanding modern architecture. The online photos and info from various people made it tantalising. But there is an important detail for the general public that has not been updated prior to covid. Or its detail that has not been provided or promoted to the public at any time. Parking a vehicle within .5 of a km is almost impossible if you want to stay for a couple of hours. Fortunately we found a spot within .5 km for 2hrs at 1500hrs which was then unlimited after 1700hrs. Then on entry to the building nick named Cheese Grater, out of curtesy I asked the desk security person about taking photos. He instructed me that access to the foyer is the only area permitted. Other areas such as the spiral looking structure as seen online were not accessible. Very disappointed. There was no mention of this online. Just details about the wonderful photo opportunities the entire building had to offer. So I used my digital SLR for the foyer only and external shots. The afternoon light was definitely the best time to capture the many shapes and shadows creating its own huge work of art. With changing of security guards I decided to ask some questions and this time managed to gain details about access by the public into forbidden areas. Apparently, presently every fortnight on a Thursday bookings can be made for a guided tour at 1500hrs. There is a small charge which is for a charity related to the institute. Whether this remains in place for the rest of 2023 or not, it would be so helpful for us keen photographers to have up to date information regarding access. Hoping SAHMARI public relations personnel can endeavour to be more proactive with this wonderful publicly owned and financed medical research building and the general publics access. Thanks Reg R.
