The statue stands in front of Manly primary school, which Cutler attended. Next to it is an older foundation stela marking 1882 as the founding year. There's an uncomfortable visual relationship between the statue and the stela, and both seem isolated from the school they honour by being squashed between a carpark and busy streets. The statue commemorates a local hero of WW2 who, although seriously injured, went on to contribute greatly to the Australian community as a diplomat and then as a long-serving Governor of New South Wales. If you like monuments, it's worth a brief diversion when walking from or to the ferry wharf.
