On a Roll

On a Roll is the yummiest place to hit Katoomba lately. Managed by the same folk who manage Big Beet, On a Roll is a burger bar offering a range of free-range or grass-fed, or generally ethically meaty-burgers and fab vego burgers. They also do yumbo fries, hearty cheesy mac and scrumptious milkshakes. If it was a bit more affordable, I'd give them 5 starts for sure, but it's worth the extra dollars to have a yummy food fix that tastes like junk-food, but feels nutritious and wholesome.

Love the concept, Staff were really friendly. The black bun was fairly pointless and a bit dry. The flavour and seasoning was right on the money however. The "pulled" brisket was not what I expected it was drowned in a gravy style sauce and was more like stewed beef rather than pulled. However it tasted great. Price puts it a little out of range to be something you would get often.

Five star burgers and great service. The coffee was great as well. We had the brisket burger and the chicken burger and were up there with the best burgers we've ever had. So glad we drove past and spotted it!

Summary: average place, quite pricey, regular burger options are fine, definitely not recommended for vegetarians or vegans. Today my wife and I went to "On a Roll". It was Sunday before the public holiday and the small cafe was quite busy. At the counter there was only one staff member, a friendly young lady. She took our order and we sat down. Our meal came sufficiently quickly, I ordered a chicken burger while my wife ordered a vegan option. My burger was fine, not the best nor the worst I've had. My wife's burger on the other hand was terrible. The burger was dripping with oil. The bun looked like it was pre covered with olive oil, the kale and mushrooms were sauted in oil as well and on top of that there was white sauce reminiscent of sour cream. The vegan pea patty was tasteless, it had no seasoning and was also soaked in oil. I ordered a deep fried chicken burger and I had less oil than the vegan option. Whilst we were sitting at our table, waiting for our food, the cafe got even more busy. The one staff member who served us finally brought our food and we asked her to grab a fork and knife for my wife, she said she will bring it, but immediately ran off and began serving others and making coffee, not bringing our requested cutlery. I am not quite sure whether the day was just busier than they expected or it is just the model of the cafe to only have one staff working the front. I would definitely recommend the owner to have at least 2 people out the front when it gets busy. Ultimately we left unhappy. I was satisfied enough with my meal, however my wife was extremely disappointed as she left three quarters of her food at the cafe.
